Puerto Lopez, Ecuador

I went to the coast and specifically to this port to see the Humpback whales. Every year starting in June, the whales make their way to Ecuador from the Antarctic. It is mating season for them and they stay until September. I took a boat tour to the Isla de Plata and on the way there and back we saw our share of whales.

Puerto Lopez is a small fishing village with a flashy malecon that attracts tourists every year around this time to see the whales. It is an arched bay on the Pacific ocean and is in the Manabi Province of Ecuador.

I was not that impressed with the town but there was a seafood market with fresh seafood every day and you could go pick out your seafood and have it cooked on the spot! I love seafood of any kind.

Los Frailles Beach in Puerto Lopez is said to be one of the best beaches in Ecuador. I have to admit it was amazing!

The Isla de Plata known as the "poor man's Galapagos" was full of the Blue Footed Boobies and some great views of the ocean. On a side note, it is super expensive to go to the Galapagos and I won't be doing that this go around but I would love to come back just to do the Galapagos Islands one day.

I only spent a few days on the coast but for me it was enough. Many expats love the coastal towns of Ecuador and you can find big communities of expats all along the coast. I was thrilled that I was able to see the whales and the boobies and I left Puerto Lopez satisfied with my stay.
